The Death Anniversary or

This anniversary is one of the most important events of every Vietnamese family. When a person in a family dies, the alive people will remember that day. Annually, when coming to that day, they will prepare a feast to memory the dead person.

It is because that Vietnamese people believe that when a person dies, only his physical body dies but his spirit or soul always exists and lives in another world.

After death, their spirits still often come back their house to visit their families. They could not eat the physical feast but they can eat the smell or scent of food and flowers. If the alive people often remember of the dead and show their respects, memories by the thorough worships, the dead, with their abnormal abilities, will feel happy and support the alive. The alive will get a lot of lucks in their life or career from their careful worships. The alive might also easily overcome their difficult time and avoid many heavy accidents thanks to the dead's support.

Vietnamese people also believe that if the alive do not worship well, all their family-line will go down. Their sons or daughters will have not a good future, the sons might be addicted to drug and the daughters might be spoiled.

Generally, in a big family, the oldest son will take charge of the family's worship. It means that when their father or mother dies, the oldest son will be responsible for making the anniversary feast and worship. Other sons or daughters will contribute money and bring fruits, wine and one bunch of incense ticks to the anniversary.

On this day, they just invite some close relatives and friends to attend the feast. The feast often includes a boiled chicken, some stir-fries, some plates of steamed or fried shrimps, several bowls of soup with bamboo-shoot and chops, wine, several dishes of sticky rice cooked with pea. All of these dishes, accompany with a pot of flowers, a big plate of five kinds of fruits and wine will be worshiped on the altar. After the incense sticks are burned out, they will enjoy the feast.

Also, before the Tet holiday, the alive will go to the grave yard to clean the dead's tombs and burn several incense sticks to invite the dead to come back to their home to enjoy the Tet holiday. In Vietnam, we call it " Le Thanh Minh".
